Bluesky Updates App With Higher-Quality Photo Support

Bluesky has released a new update aimed at improving how images are shared and viewed on its platform. Version 1.121, announced this week, introduces higher upload limits, improved resolution, and a redesigned layout for multi-image posts.

The most notable change is the increase in maximum image file size. Previously capped at 1MB, users can now upload photos up to 2MB. Alongside this, Bluesky has doubled the maximum display resolution from 2000 pixels to 4000 pixels. These adjustments are expected to result in clearer, more detailed images across the app, addressing a common limitation noted by users since the platform’s early growth.

Bluesky has also replaced its existing image grid with a swipeable carousel format. The new layout allows for mixed aspect ratios without automatically cropping images, offering more flexibility for users posting varied photo sets.

This aligns Bluesky more closely with features seen on competing platforms, where carousel-based viewing has become standard. Rivals such as X and Threads already offer robust image-sharing capabilities, including support for multiple aspect ratios and advanced carousel features. Threads, in particular, gained attention at launch for its photo-friendly design, which encouraged creative posting formats.

However, early user feedback suggests the change may not fully satisfy all preferences. Some users have expressed interest in having the option to choose between the older grid format and the new carousel, particularly for posts designed with a specific visual arrangement in mind. Either way, the improved photo quality support will make the platform much more viable for artists, bloggers, and anybody else whose brand or content relies heavily on their image posts.
