Hinge Launches ‘Date Ideas’ Feature to Facilitate First Dates

Hinge has introduced a new “Date Ideas” feature aimed at addressing one of the most common complaints on dating apps: matches who engage in prolonged messaging without ever progressing to an in-person date, often referred to as “pen pal” behavior.

The feature allows users to select and display three first-date ideas directly on their profile during the creation process. Options include activities such as coffee, drinks, karaoke, live music, or thrifting, with the ability to replace one preset suggestion with a custom idea. The goal is to signal early interest in meeting offline and make it easier for matches to initiate actual plans.

According to Hinge, the update responds to user feedback showing that many conversations fizzle out due to uncertainty about how or when to suggest meeting. A Hinge survey found that 76% of respondents had let a promising conversation die because they were unsure how to propose a date or whether the other person was open to it. Additionally, 79% of users expressed a desire to move quickly toward planning an in-real-life (IRL) date after matching.

By placing date ideas prominently on profiles, Hinge hopes to reduce guesswork and hesitation. Matches can view suggested activities and use them as a starting point for conversation or planning, with details to be finalized in chat. Hinge emphasizes that the tool is not an automated scheduling system but a way to express intentionality from the outset.
