Grindr for Equality Launches ‘Out in the Open’ Health Series
Grindr for Equality has introduced a new content series called “Out in the Open” aimed at addressing important issues facing the LGBTQ+ community through open conversations and accessible support.
The first installment, produced in partnership with UK-based peer-support organization You Are Loved, focuses on chemsex – the use of drugs in sexual contexts. The series features discussions with experts from You Are Loved, LGBTQIA+ helpline Switchboard, wellbeing app Voda, and individuals with lived experience, including former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas and author Paris Lees.
New research released alongside the launch shows that 19% of LGBTQ+ individuals have lost someone to a drug-related death. Additionally, 28% of LGBTQ+ people reported having sex while using drugs in the past year. The study also found that 61% of UK adults are unfamiliar with the term “chemsex,” while 63% of the queer community say the issue remains heavily stigmatized.
The content series is available through Grindr Presents (the app’s content hub), Grindr’s YouTube channel, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. Grindr has also updated in-app resources to direct users seeking support to You Are Loved and Switchboard.
Mohan Sundararaj, Managing Director of Grindr for Equality, stated that the initiative aims to challenge stigma and connect users with judgment-free resources. Marc Svensson, Founder and CEO of You Are Loved, described the partnership as an important step toward addressing root causes such as loneliness, shame, and lack of safe spaces.
The series highlights cultural norms around sex, pressure within the gay community, and the need for better access to addiction treatment and inclusive mental health care. Two in five (40%) LGBTQ+ respondents called for improved support services.
