Grindr Introduces Timestamped “Taken on Grindr” Photo Feature
Grindr has rolled out a new feature aimed at enhancing user trust and safety: “Taken on Grindr.” This tool allows users to attach a timestamp and watermark to photos captured through the app’s built-in camera, helping verify that the images are recent and taken in real time.
The feature, announced via Grindr’s official blog on April 7, enables users to include a small “Taken on Grindr” label and a relative time tag – such as “just now” or “2 days ago” – on photos shared in chats or on their profiles. According to Grindr, the tool was developed in response to ongoing concerns around authenticity and catfishing on dating platforms.
The watermark is optional and can be turned on or off at the user’s discretion. Photos taken outside the app or uploaded from a device’s gallery will not include the timestamp, ensuring that users retain flexibility in how they present themselves while still offering an extra layer of verification when desired.
Grindr says the goal is to “empower users with new tools to connect confidently and authentically.” While the feature doesn’t prevent deception entirely, it gives users a simple, visible way to show when their photo was taken, potentially increasing trust in digital-first interactions.
The release of “Taken on Grindr” comes amid a broader industry push toward safer, more transparent online dating environments. It echoes similar steps taken by platforms to combat identity misrepresentation and promote real-time engagement. The feature is now available across the latest version of the Grindr app, accessible through the in-app camera when updating a profile or messaging others.
