Hinge Introduces Educational Warnings for Inappropriate Messages

Hinge is introducing mandatory educational tutorials for users who send inappropriate messages, allowing them to correct their behaviour and avoid an immediate ban.

When a conversation is flagged for harassment, a human moderator reviews the messages and assesses the severity of the violation. For less serious offences, users receive a warning and must complete a short educational walkthrough before they can continue using the dating app. Serious or repeated violations can still result in permanent bans.

The walkthrough explains why certain messages may be offensive and offers guidance on more respectful communication. Examples include avoiding unsolicited comments about someone’s body, keeping jokes from becoming personal attacks, and establishing mutual interest before introducing sexual topics.

The initiative builds on Hinge’s existing safety features, including Are You Sure?, which prompts users to reconsider potentially offensive messages before sending them, and Did This Bother You?, which encourages users to report uncomfortable interactions. Last year, Hinge also introduced a moderation approach that removes individual pieces of inappropriate profile content rather than automatically deleting the entire profile.
