Instagram Rolls Out AI-Powered Transitions for Still-Image Stories
Instagram introduced a new AI-driven feature allowing users to transform static photo carousels in Stories into seamless, animated video transitions. The tool, called “AI Transition,” uses generative AI to morph between multiple still images, creating a smooth, moving sequence that plays as a short video in Stories.
To use the feature, users must agree to Meta AI’s terms of service (prompted on first activation). Once enabled, the option appears in the Stories image gallery. Users select two or more photos, and the AI generates a fluid transition – blending poses, backgrounds, and elements to simulate motion. The resulting clip can be posted directly as a Story or downloaded and repurposed as a Reel.
Meta positions the update as a creative way to breathe life into photo-based Stories without requiring video recording. It builds on Instagram’s growing suite of AI tools, including generative effects, caption suggestions, and background removal, as the company continues embedding artificial intelligence across its platforms.
While no official examples have been shared by Instagram, similar AI morphing tools in other apps have produced mixed results. Transitions can appear natural for aligned poses or thematic series (e.g., outfit changes, travel montages), but they sometimes create uncanny distortions such as unnatural limb movements.
The feature arrives as Instagram seeks to keep Stories engaging amid competition from TikTok and Snapchat, where short-form video dominates. By turning static carousels into dynamic clips, AI Transition offers a low-effort bridge between photo and video content creation, potentially appealing to users who prefer still imagery but want motion for higher engagement. Naturally, this also encourages users to create more video content, even if they’re more interested in taking photos than recording videos themselves.
