X Adds Number Codes for Private Access to Direct Messages

X may be rolling out a new number-code feature that gives users another way to control who can contact them through its updated messaging system.

The feature allows X Chat users to generate a unique 10-digit code that can be shared with people who are not already connected to them. Rather than providing a phone number or opening direct messages to everyone, users can give selected people the code to gain access to their DMs.

Users visiting a profile who are not mutual followers can enter the account’s X number when attempting to contact that person. Once access is enabled, the users can communicate through X Chat, including audio and video calls.

The number can also be refreshed, allowing users to effectively replace an existing code and restrict access previously granted through it. X is currently rolling out the feature to users.

There are also potential safety considerations. Giving users greater control over message access can reduce unwanted contact, but it still depends on users being able to manage and revoke access effectively. The ability to refresh a code provides one mechanism for doing so.

X has been expanding its messaging tools to support communication beyond existing follower relationships. The number-code system adds another layer between completely open messaging and fully restricted DMs, reflecting a broader shift toward giving users more granular control over how new contacts reach them.
