Instagram Tests Allowing Users to Replace Text on Reels
Instagram is testing a new feature called “Swap” that would let users replace the text on someone else’s Reel with their own. A brief explainer article appeared in Instagram’s Help Center over the weekend before being removed, indicating the feature is still in development – however, some hints of the original article remain, such as the auto-generated tags under the header.
According to the now-deleted article, the Swap tool would enable users to “replace the text on someone else’s reel with your own text.” Creators would also have the option to disable the feature on their own content. The tool appears designed to let users easily add their personal spin to trending Reels by changing on-screen text overlays.
The Swap feature could allow users to create derivative meme-style Reels more easily, potentially blurring the line between original and unoriginal content. While Instagram encourages crediting original creators and adding unique value, the platform relies on automation to enforce these rules, which may lead to inconsistent application.
The timing of this test is notable, as it comes shortly after Instagram announced stronger measures against unoriginal and aggregator content. Last week, the platform said it would reduce distribution for accounts that primarily repost or duplicate content without adding “meaningful creative input.”
This new feature raises questions about how Instagram plans to distinguish between low-effort reposts and creative remixes. Instagram has clarified that its penalties target accounts that consistently post unoriginal content rather than individual posts. Accounts can regain full recommendation eligibility if most of their recent content is considered original over a 30-day period.
It remains unclear whether Swap will be rolled out widely or how it will interact with the new aggregator penalties. The temporary appearance and quick removal of the Help Center article suggest Instagram is still evaluating the feature and its potential impact.
