Love After Loss: UK Widows Face Hurdles in Re-Entering the Dating World
New research from Chapter 2, a dating community for widows and widowers, has revealed some key statistics in how being a widow or widower can influence a person’s approach to dating. The survey, tying in with the new Bridget Jones film, was conducted with nearly 15,000 widowed individuals – 63% had lost their partner within the past one to five years, and 11% within the last year. While many are drawn to dating again, a significant number continue to grapple with grief.
Ninety percent of respondents acknowledged that memories of their late partners influenced their approach to new relationships, with 45% admitting they often feel guilt or hesitation when considering dating again. Despite this, more than half (54%) reported feeling comfortable discussing their widowhood on a first date, and there is still a there is a willingness among widows and widowers to embrace new relationships.
However, dating with children in the picture adds further complexities – 80% of respondents are parents, and nearly a quarter (24%) said their children’s well-being was their primary concern when pursuing new relationships. Beyond personal struggles, widowed individuals also face a lack of resources and support. Sixty-three percent of respondents said there are not enough spaces or communities tailored to their needs.
While this obviously applies across the whole dating sphere, it could be especially important for apps that are looking to cater to the needs of widows and widowers. Digital dating platforms provide an easy way to offer support and connection without being hard to access, making it much easier for users to get a second start in their dating life.
