Most Adults Unable To Spot AI Dating Profiles In Study

A recent study by fashion brand Pour Moi reveals that a significant number of adults struggle to distinguish between real and AI-generated dating profiles. The global survey, which involved 3,000 participants, aimed to assess people’s ability to identify artificial intelligence-created profiles in online dating, a growing concern in the digital dating world of 2025. Notably, this didn’t just included images, but entire profiles – which could also mean bios, interests, and other smaller details.

Although 57% of respondents expressed confidence in their ability to spot AI profiles, the study found that 62% failed to accurately identify them when tested. The survey presented participants with a mix of 60% real profiles and 40% AI-generated profiles, and 22% of respondents failed to recognize any of the profiles as fake.

Demographic analysis showed that older adults were particularly vulnerable to falling for AI-generated profiles. Among those aged 55 and older, 32% believed all the profiles shown to them were genuine, compared to younger participants, with 72% of 18-to-24-year-olds confident in their ability to spot AI-generated content. However, even in this age group, 55% struggled to correctly identify the artificial profiles.

Pour Moi, known for promoting confidence in the dating space, commissioned this research in light of the growing prevalence of catfishing. According to the study, 12% of participants had fallen victim to catfishing, and 25% suspected they had been targeted. The study’s findings highlight the need for increased vigilance and transparency in the online dating industry, especially as AI-generated profiles continue to become more convincing.

Marina Nicoli, Marketing Manager at Pour Moi, emphasized the importance of protecting users’ confidence in the face of digital deception. “With the rise of AI and catfishing, we want to ensure that our customers don’t get their confidence knocked down by timewasters,” she said.
