New AI Girlfriend App Teaches the Art of Navigating Conflict
A new “AI girlfriend” dating app is teaching users the art of navigating conflict and communication in relationships.
Unlike the general companionship being more regularly seen from AI companionship apps, chatbot companion app, AngryGF, gamifies the communication skills needed to navigate disagreements with a partner, putting users in simulated situations that might infuriate a real-life girlfriend.
Would-be scenarios navigated range from broaching bad financial decisions to sparking jealousy in the relationship by complimenting a female friend. Users can score points by “successfully calming their partner down”. According the AngryGF’s app store write-up, users “need to use effective soothing techniques to make them forgive you.” It continues: “Through this process, you will discover that conversational skills in a relationship can be learned and improved.”
In an interview with Wired, the app’s co-founder, Emilia Aviles, said the app had been inspired by her own relationships marred by poor communication skills. “You know men,” Emilia says, “they listen, but then they don’t take action.”
Emilia noted that the app hadn’t consulted any external relationship therapists or experts during its development.
AngryGF is available on both Apple App Store and Google Play.
