Threads Tests Playable Music Stickers for In-Stream Song Sharing

Threads is rolling out a new feature that allows users to add playable music stickers directly to their posts. The test, which began appearing in early May 2026, lets users attach specific songs that others can play without leaving the app.

When added to a Thread, the music sticker displays the song’s cover art thumbnail along with a play button. Tapping it plays a sample clip of the track in-stream. The feature functions similarly to music sharing tools already available on Instagram and other platforms.

This update brings Threads closer in functionality to Meta’s other apps and helps it compete with TikTok, which has become a major platform for music discovery and promotion. Meta has been actively negotiating with record labels to expand licensed music capabilities across its family of apps.

The music sticker will appear as an option in the post composer alongside photos, videos, polls, and other attachments. It is currently in limited testing and has not yet rolled out to all users. Threads designer Christopher Clare shared an example of the feature in action.

While not a groundbreaking addition, playable music stickers could increase engagement by making it easier for users to share new releases, favorite tracks, or tie posts to specific moods or moments. Music sharing has proven popular on other platforms as a way to boost interaction and keep users in-app longer. This also allows music to be played within the feed itself, keeping users within the platform – somethign taht could actually be a huge boon to Meta’s overal ecosystem intent for Threads.
