TikTok Rejects End-to-End DM Encryption Over Privacy Concerns

TikTok has decided against implementing end-to-end encryption for direct messages, according to a report from the BBC. The company stated that E2EE would hinder its ability to protect users – particularly younger ones – by preventing safety teams and law enforcement from accessing messages when needed to address harmful content or illegal activity.

End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient can read message contents, with no access possible by the platform or third parties. TikTok currently applies standard encryption to DMs, similar to protections used by services like Gmail. Only authorized employees can view messages, and only under strict conditions – such as responding to valid law enforcement requests or investigating user reports of abuse, harassment, or other violations.

The decision is deliberate, positioning TikTok differently from rivals that have adopted E2EE as standard for private chats. Apps like Signal, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger (for 1:1 chats and calls), Apple Messages, and Google Messages all use E2EE by default, making content inaccessible even to the platforms themselves.

TikTok emphasized user safety as the primary reason for rejecting E2EE. The company argued that the ability to monitor and intervene in messages is essential for detecting and removing harmful content, especially given the platform’s large youth audience and ongoing scrutiny over child safety, exploitation risks, and moderation effectiveness.
