Tinder to Require ‘Proof of Humanity’ Verification

Tinder is introducing a new “proof of humanity” verification system in partnership with World, a company co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, to combat the growing problem of AI-generated fake profiles. The move addresses increasing concerns over realistic AI-created images and videos being used to create deceptive dating profiles.

These fake accounts often attempt to catfish users, sometimes leading to requests for money or the collection of personal information. World’s verification process uses specialized orb-shaped cameras to scan users’ irises, creating a biometric “proof of humanity” that confirms the person is real and not an AI-generated or bot account. This goes beyond Tinder’s existing requirement for users to submit a video selfie for verification.

According to Match Group’s Trust and Safety lead Yoel Roth, the partnership with World represents the “next natural step” in improving platform security as AI technology continues to advance. Tinder already uses various AI tools within the app, including features that analyze user photos to suggest profile improvements.

The rise of highly convincing AI-generated images has made catfishing significantly easier on visual-first dating apps like Tinder. Other platforms, such as Seeking, have also introduced AI-based verification methods in response to similar issues. While the new verification aims to increase user safety and trust, it also raises questions about privacy and the collection of sensitive biometric data. Users will likely need to complete the iris scan process to maintain full access to the app’s features.
