Instagram Rolls Out “AI Creator” Profile Labels for Transparency

Instagram has introduced a new “AI Creator” label for accounts that regularly produce content using artificial intelligence tools. The feature, announced on May 4, 2026, allows qualifying creators to toggle the label on their profile, displaying it prominently alongside their bio and applying relevant indicators to their posts.

The label complements Instagram’s existing “AI info” tags, which can be manually added by users or automatically applied by the platform when it detects AI-generated material. When an “AI Creator” posts labeled content, the individual post will show the “AI info” tag rather than repeating the profile label. Instagram states that the change is intended to provide clearer context for viewers and reduce confusion around AI-generated images and videos.

This update arrives as AI tools become increasingly capable of producing realistic content. In January 2026, Instagram head Adam Mosseri warned that AI would soon be able to replicate any creator’s style in ways that are difficult to distinguish from human-made posts. The new labeling system aims to help users differentiate between original and AI-assisted material in a feed filled with mixed content types.

The move reflects a balancing act for Meta. The company is heavily investing in generative AI and actively encouraging users to experiment with its tools. At the same time, it faces the challenge of maintaining platform trust as AI content proliferates. Transparency through labels is Instagram’s chosen approach rather than restricting AI use outright.
