Tribal Launches With ‘Connections First, Photos Later’ Dating Approach

A newly launched dating app, Tribal, is taking a different approach to online matchmaking by hiding users’ profile photos for the first 72 hours after connecting. The goal is to encourage more meaningful conversations and connections beyond just physical attraction.

Rather than relying solely on appearance, Tribal matches users based on shared values, interests, and communication styles. Faces are blurred initially, meaning that the matches are made based on the contents of users’ profiles rather than their physical attractiveness – the platform uses a questionnaire (44 questions for dating and 33 for friendships) each backed by scientific research as the basis for compatability.

Founded by clinical psychologist Rachel Harker, the app was designed in response to concerns about the negative impact of swipe culture on mental health. Harker observed that many traditional dating apps leave users feeling frustrated due to ghosting, superficial interactions, and algorithm-driven experiences that prioritize quantity over quality.

“Everyone owns a smartphone, yet people are more disconnected than ever before,” Harker explained, adding that the app serves both as a dating platform and a tool for making new friends.

A key feature is the Tribal Map, an AI-powered tool that visually represents a user’s core values, helping potential matches quickly assess compatibility. Additionally, the app offers a voice memo feature, allowing users to hear their match’s voice while their profile photo remains blurred. Harker emphasizes that the 72-hour blur is not meant to eliminate attraction but rather to shift the focus to deeper qualities. “True connections will last, but looks fade,” she stated.
