UK PM Set For Under 16s Social Media Restrictions
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to announce restrictions on children’s access to “harmful” social media platforms for those under 16. The plan, reported by The Times, follows consultations on online safety and review of Australia’s under-16 ban implemented in December 2025.
A Downing Street source stated that Starmer is willing to challenge tech companies to protect young people. However, a full ban is unlikely to be detailed immediately. The government may instead outline measures to prevent children from producing sexualized images that could be used for sextortion.
The UK already has the Online Safety Act, which requires platforms to protect minors from illegal and harmful content. The new push considers additional options such as curfews, time limits, and limits on addictive design features. Starmer is expected to emphasize the positive potential of technology while addressing risks.
Several European countries are pursuing similar policies. France, Denmark, and Poland are considering tighter rules, while Greece plans to ban social media access for those under 15 from January 2027.
