WhatsApp Rolls Out Parent-Managed Accounts for Pre-Teens

WhatsApp has introduced parent-managed accounts, giving guardians new tools to supervise their children’s messaging activity. The feature targets pre-teens – children under the platform’s official 13-year minimum age – allowing parents to set up and monitor supervised accounts even if the child doesn’t meet the standard age requirement.

Parents (or guardians 18+) download WhatsApp on their own device and create a linked, managed account for their child. Once enabled, parents gain visibility and control over key aspects of the child’s WhatsApp use:

  • See who the child is messaging or receiving messages from.
  • Review and approve message requests from unknown contacts.
  • Decide which group chats the child can join.
  • Monitor profile changes and privacy settings.
  • Restrict contacts and interactions to approved people only.

All parental controls are protected by a PIN on the child’s device, ensuring only the parent can adjust settings or privacy options. The setup emphasizes transparency while maintaining WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption for messages.

The move addresses a practical reality: despite the 13+ age floor (aligned with most major social apps), younger children are already using or asking to use WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app. By offering official supervised access, WhatsApp aims to provide safer entry points rather than leaving families to unofficial workarounds.

The feature draws comparisons to parental controls in apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, though those typically focus on teens. WhatsApp’s pre-teen emphasis stands out, reflecting demand in regions where WhatsApp serves as a primary communication tool for families, school groups, and community coordination.
