Chinese Government Takes Uneasy Stance Towards Online Dating

The Chinese government, wary of spies and western subversion, has recently issued warnings to the country’s Gen-Z citizens about the potential risks associated with the internet, pop culture, and rock music. This has included many warnings about online dating – more specifically, part of a broader campaign led by Xi Jinping to strengthen national security awareness among citizens.

The new warnings came in an official government textbook that forms the foundation of a new National Security Education course in Chinese universities, essentially making them a core part of the educational process for Generation Z students. Although these warnings are mostly meant to prevent spies from exploiting younger citizens into giving up information, it could have major impacts on dating apps operating within China, or ones that were thinking of expanding into the country in the near future.

While China has many dating apps exclusively available only within China itself, the country also enjoys access to platforms like Bumble and Tinder. All social media businesses operating in China or engaging with Chinese audiences – including major dating platforms – must navigate this increasingly cautious environment where Gen-Z are being directly told to step back from using them as readily.

Regulations surrounding dating platforms are nothing new, but this shift in attitude could hint toward long-term distrust of dating sites. This tighter grip on social platforms could directly impact both the platforms themselves and the investors behind them, as well as potentially damaging their active user count if many Chinese citizens heed those warnings.
