Match Group Research Finds Gen Alpha Optimistic About Dating
Match Group has released new research into Gen Alpha’s attitudes towards dating, finding that the next generation of singles is optimistic about relationships and open to using dating apps. The company surveyed 823 US teenagers aged 13 to 15, alongside earlier interviews and focus groups with young people aged 14 to 19.
The study found that 51% would consider using dating apps when they turn 18, while 65% believe the platforms could be a fun way to meet people. Only 20% have been in a relationship so far, compared with 56% of Gen Z respondents who had dated during their teenage years. However, three-quarters of Gen Alpha teens who are not currently dating are open to doing so.
Among those open to dating, 48% are interested in friendships that could develop into romance, while 44% prefer talking or flirting. Meanwhile, 64% believe people should be friends before dating, and 66% consider dating multiple people simultaneously disrespectful.
The research found that 92% are happy with their social lives, 84% are optimistic about their future, and 87% are confident about achieving milestones such as marriage, homeownership and having children. Match Group believes the findings suggest a more positive outlook than that seen in its earlier Gen Z research. With Gen Alpha approaching dating-app age, the company is examining how the next generation’s expectations could shape the future of online dating.
