Match Group owned platform Plenty Of Fish set to introduce a host of new conversation features dubbed ‘Conversation Powers’.
The Plenty Of Fish Conversation Powers will include voice messaging, video calling, and photo sharing functionalities.
Users will also be able to share GIFs in conversations, and doodle / add stickers to images they upload.
One novel aspect of the move is that Plenty Of Fish Conversation Powers will only become available once a matched couple have been talking for a period of time.
CEO Hesam Hosseini said of the move: “(…) when it comes to actually being in a conversation, dating apps are several years behind social apps. Plenty Of Fish is poised to lead the charge on that”.
The Plenty Of Fish user base is largely 30+, making it an unusual choice for video and Snapchat-style features.
Hosseini feels that video features are “on their way to becoming more mainstream”, however, and also feels that older users are more comfortable with voice calls before a potential date.
The option to call a match can also be read as a safety feature – users will be able to phone one another without exchanging numbers.
techcrunch.com reports that “GIFs and illustrations aren’t being rolled out until 2018, but messaging, calling and photo sharing features are arriving today on iOS and Android. They will be also be available on the mobile web and desktop later this year.”
