Russia Blocks WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram

In a major escalation of internet controls, Russian authorities have implemented full blocks on WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram as of February 12, 2026, severely limiting access for millions of users. The move, confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, stems from Meta’s alleged failure to comply with Russian laws, with officials urging citizens to switch to the state-backed MAX messaging app.

Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, removed the domains of these Meta-owned platforms from the national Domain Name System (NDNS), rendering them inaccessible without VPNs or other workarounds. This structural block follows years of restrictions: Facebook and Instagram were designated “extremist” and banned in 2022 amid the Ukraine conflict, while platforms like LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok were already limited.

The crackdown extends beyond Meta – YouTube access has been disrupted, and Telegram (one of Russia’s most popular messengers) faces throttling and restrictions. Authorities have cited non-compliance with data laws, failure to curb “criminal content,” and broader “digital sovereignty” goals.

Central to the strategy is MAX, a government-developed “national messenger” pre-installed on all new smartphones since August 2025. Understandably, this has left several apps with a sudden drop in its overal user base due to Russian users no longer being able to access said platforms – which may harm Meta in particular, due to WhatsApp alone having well over 100 millon users locagted in Russia.
