Survey: Americans Spend Over $6000 Annually on Dates
According to a recent survey by CouponPi, the average American spends around $6,138 annually on their relationship, with a substantial portion of that budget going toward dates, activities, and gifts.
The survey of 1,000 U.S. adults revealed that couples often prioritize experiences together, with the most significant expense being dining out, averaging $1,624 per person per year. Attending events like concerts and sports games is another major cost, accounting for $1,569 annually. Casual outings such as visiting museums or grabbing coffee add up to $1,203 per year.
Marriage, though declining in the U.S., comes with its own financial responsibilities. The study found that married couples spend 47.6% more annually on their relationships than unmarried couples, with increased spending on dates and gifts. By the time they marry, couples typically spend over $19,000 in total on their relationship.
Financial stress related to relationship expenses is common, with over 50% of respondents admitting to feeling burdened by the cost of gifts and activities. Interestingly, LGBTQ+ couples tend to split costs more evenly than their straight counterparts, with 46.7% of gay and lesbian couples sharing expenses 50/50 compared to just 28.8% of straight couples.
The survey also highlighted a connection between spending and relationship satisfaction. Couples who spend more time on shared activities report higher happiness levels. For instance, those who frequently attend events or go on weekend getaways tend to be much happier in their relationships than those who don’t.
