Bumble Plans to “Say Goodbye” To The Swipe System

Bumble plans to eliminate its signature swipe-based matching system later in 2026 as part of a significant redesign of the platform. CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd confirmed the change in an interview with Axios on May 7, 2026, stating, “We are going to be saying goodbye to the swipe and hello to something that I believe is revolutionary for the category.”

The company will begin phasing out swiping in select markets during Q4 2026. While details of the replacement system remain limited, the shift is expected to center on AI-driven matchmaking, more detailed “chapter-style” profiles, and new ways for users to express interest. This aligns with Bumble’s broader “Bumble 2.0” initiative, which includes a rebuilt cloud-native, AI-enabled tech platform and an AI assistant called “Bee” designed to improve compatibility matching and reduce superficial interactions.

The move comes as the dating app industry grapples with user fatigue, particularly among Gen Z. In its Q1 2026 earnings, Bumble reported a 21.1% year-over-year decline in paying users to 3.2 million, contributing to a 14.1% drop in revenue to $212.4 million. The company has described the user base reduction as a deliberate “reset” to prioritize higher-quality, more engaged members.

Bumble is also moving away from its long-standing “women message first” rule in heterosexual matches as part of the redesign. Wolfe Herd emphasized maintaining the app’s core value of empowering women while evolving the experience to better suit current user expectations.

The decision reflects broader challenges in the sector. Many younger users report burnout with endless swiping and low conversion rates from matches to real dates. Bumble’s overhaul, including enhanced AI personalization and features aimed at facilitating in-person meetings, represents one of the most significant departures from the swipe model pioneered by Tinder over a decade ago.
