Facebook Adds Nickname Option to Group Posts

Facebook is rolling out a new feature in its Groups that lets members post and comment using a custom nickname rather than their real names. This option, which can be enabled by group admins, is now available alongside the “Post anonymously” toggle.

When creating a post, users can choose to “Customize a nickname” and enter any name that conforms to Facebook’s Community Standards. They can also select a specially designed avatar — often whimsical images like animals wearing sunglasses — that will appear next to their nickname in that specific group. Once set, the nickname becomes the user’s identity within that group, whether they’re posting, commenting, or reacting.

Unlike anonymous posting, nicknames are intended for ongoing community participation rather than one-off messages. This allows someone to build a recognizable presence in a Facebook Group without revealing their real-world identity. However, while other group members will see only the nickname, moderators, admins, and Facebook’s internal systems will still be able to see the user’s real profile.

There are some practical limits to how nicknames work. For example, users can only change their nickname once every two days, and when they do, their new nickname is applied retroactively to their past posts, comments, and reactions in that group – meaning they can’t erase their former identity. Some features are disabled when posting under a nickname, too: users can’t go Live, share certain content types, or send private messages under their alternate name. Meta says this change is part of a broader effort to make Groups feel safer and more accessible by allowing a middle ground between full anonymity and using a real name.
