Grindr Survey Indicates Shift Toward More Authentic Profile Photos

A new survey by Grindr suggests UK users are increasingly favoring authentic and personality-driven profile images over heavily filtered or blurry gym selfies. According to the research, 83% of respondents believe the best profile pictures reveal something about a person’s character rather than focusing solely on physical appearance.

The findings point to a change in how “thirst traps” are viewed and created. While provocative images remain popular, users appear more interested in photos that convey confidence, playfulness, and individuality. Common settings such as bedroom mirrors, gym changing rooms, and bathrooms continue to dominate, but the emphasis is shifting toward natural presentation and self-expression rather than polished or staged shots.

Grindr is highlighting this trend during its Pride 2026 activities, including a “Thirst Trap Boot Camp” at the Mighty Hoopla festival in London. Former rugby player and model Keegan Hirst is acting as a “thirst trap coach,” helping attendees take professional photos inside the app’s traveling “Bussy” vehicle. The activation is part of Grindr’s broader “Rides Europe” tour, which includes events in multiple cities.

Hirst noted that the most effective thirst traps balance confidence with authenticity and leave room for curiosity. Grindr’s chief marketing officer Tristan Pineiro emphasized that profile images serve as first impressions and statements of confidence on the platform. Grindr continues to dominate the gay dating space, but is navigating competition from newer apps that emphasize privacy and community – many of which have been created specifically to fill niches that larger platforms have left unfilled.

The survey reflects ongoing user fatigue with superficial interactions on dating apps. As platforms face criticism for encouraging inauthentic content, this apparent preference for genuine self-presentation may influence how users engage and what features apps prioritize. However, whether this shift leads to better connection outcomes or simply changes the style of profile curation remains unclear.
