Hinge Founder Raises $18M for Voice-Based App Overtone
Justin McLeod, the founder of Hinge, has secured $18 million in funding for Overtone, a new voice- and audio-focused dating service that uses AI for curated introductions.
The funding round includes participation from Match Group (Hinge’s parent company), FirstMark Capital, and Pace Capital. McLeod stepped down as Hinge CEO last year to pursue this new venture.
Overtone positions itself as distinct from traditional dating apps. According to McLeod, it avoids profile-based swiping, algorithmic feeds, and managing multiple simultaneous conversations. Instead, the service emphasizes voice-based interactions and deeper personal stories, using AI to identify potentially compatible matches based on relationship science.
McLeod noted in a blog post that the platform aims to make only introductions it considers worthwhile, with transparent explanations for each pairing. This approach seeks to address widespread user frustration with current dating apps. A 2024 Forbes Health survey found that 78% of dating app users reported burnout, with many spending significant time on platforms without meaningful results.
Several other startups, such as Ditto and Date Drop, are also exploring AI-driven matching models that reduce reliance on swipe mechanics and endless choice. These platforms aim to combat issues like ghosting and superficial judgments by prioritizing quality over quantity of potential connections.
Overtone is expected to launch later in 2026 in select locations. The company has added prominent advisors, including relationship expert Esther Perel, Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff, and leadership advisor Diana Chapman to its board.
