Instagram Expands AI Translation Features for Reels Content
Instagram has added more artificial intelligence-powered translation options for Reels, enabling creators to reach audiences in additional languages.
The platform now supports automatic translation into Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Italian, in addition to previously available languages. Meta’s AI system translates both audio and captions while attempting to synchronize the original creator’s mouth movements with the translated speech.
This creates an audio variation that aims to make it appear as though the creator is speaking the new language. Instagram has indicated that the feature helps content reach wider audiences. Instagram head Adam Mosseri noted that Reels translations now cover 14 languages, though Meta’s separate announcement referenced 18, including several spoken in India, the platform’s largest market.
Creators with more than 1,000 followers can access the translation tools in the Reels composer. They are able to select two languages per translation, review the results, disable lip-syncing, or discard the translation entirely before posting.
The expansion reflects Meta’s ongoing investment in AI tools to enhance content distribution across its platforms. Similar translation features are being rolled out on Facebook for languages including Bahasa Indonesia, Arabic, French, Vietnamese, and Thai.
While the technology can broaden reach, results may vary. AI-generated lip synchronization can sometimes appear unnatural, potentially affecting viewer experience even when the core message is conveyed. Creators are encouraged to evaluate translations before publishing.
