Match Group Says AI Agents Have No Place on Dating Apps
Match Group is introducing safeguards to prevent AI agents from operating on its dating apps, including Tinder and Hinge. CEO Spencer Rascoff said the company wants users to browse profiles and communicate with potential matches themselves, rather than allowing AI agents to perform these activities on their behalf.
The decision comes as technology companies increasingly explore AI agents that can carry out tasks for users. While these tools are designed to make online activities faster and easier, Match Group believes that removing too much effort from dating could undermine the experience. Its restrictions apply even to AI agents representing genuine users.
Rascoff argued that some friction is necessary for meaningful human interaction, particularly when it comes to forming relationships. Match Group is encouraging other online platforms to consider whether allowing AI agents to take over user activities serves their customers’ interests, rather than automatically adopting the technology.
The company continues to explore AI applications within its own products, but its position distinguishes between technology that assists users and autonomous agents that interact with other people on their behalf.
