Match Group Continues to Pursue Tinder Turnaround

Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff is steadily pursuing a broader strategy to revive Tinder, combining increased investment in the flagship dating app with product changes and expansion into adjacent areas of the dating and social market.

Rascoff, who joined Match Group’s board in 2024 before becoming CEO in February 2025, took over as the company faced declining Tinder user numbers and pressure from activist investors. Since then, the company has increased marketing spending and accelerated product development while reducing its reliance on à la carte features as a source of monetisation.

One of the more significant changes has been Tinder Events, an in-app feature that allows eligible users to discover and sign up for in-person meetups. The move represents an effort to expand Tinder beyond its traditional swipe-and-message model and create more opportunities for users to interact offline.

Early engagement figures suggest there is interest in the concept. During a Los Angeles pilot, 71% of Tinder users aged 18 to 24 engaged with the Events tab, according to Rascoff.

Match Group has also made a series of strategic bets outside its core Tinder business. The company acquired HER, a dating platform focused on queer women, while also investing $100 million in Sniffies, a map-based platform for queer men. The investments give Match exposure to different forms of dating and social discovery while broadening its portfolio beyond its largest brands.

The strategy comes as Match Group attempts to address wider challenges facing the online dating sector, including changing user behaviour, competition for younger users and concerns about the effectiveness of traditional app-based matchmaking.

Rascoff has credited the company’s board with giving him the latitude to pursue initiatives that might previously have been viewed as outside Tinder’s traditional remit. Match Group has also added directors with expertise in marketplaces, e-commerce, streaming and trust and safety. Financially, the turnaround remains a work in progress. Match Group reported second-quarter revenue down 1% year over year, although net income increased 36% to $171 million. The company’s share price has also risen since Rascoff became CEO.
