Meta Expands Edits App with Desktop Version and AI Assistant
Meta has announced updates to its Edits video editing app, including a desktop version and an AI-powered production assistant. The changes were previewed at an invite-only creator event in Los Angeles.
The desktop version will allow creators to develop video projects on larger screens, potentially improving workflow integration for those managing content across multiple tools. This may be useful for social media marketers and teams handling higher-volume production.
The AI assistant is designed to provide idea suggestions and analytics-based tips, similar to Meta’s existing creator dashboard chatbot. It will analyze post performance and recommend concepts for future videos. Advanced functions, such as direct video editing assistance or detailed trend explanations, are not yet available but may be added later. The tool is currently in limited testing with a small group of creators.
Other recent Edits updates include expanded inspiration drawn from trending Instagram content, new transition effects, and support for multiple project versions. A new beta tab has also been added, allowing users to test experimental features before broader rollout.
These enhancements continue Meta’s pattern of regular improvements to the standalone app since its launch. The focus remains on supporting short-form video creation, particularly for platforms like Instagram and Facebook Reels, so improving Edits naturally flows into the obvious goal of driving more users to create their own video content regardless of the platform that they’re on. Given that Edits is already in Meta’s ecosystem, a desktop version also allows them to compete with existing video editing software like Videopad and CapCut.
