TikTok Introduces Digital Trading Cards for 2026 FIFA World Cup
TikTok has launched a collection of digital trading cards for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in partnership with Panini. The feature is integrated into the app’s broader tournament programming, which includes exclusive highlights, behind-the-scenes content, effects, and stickers.
Users can unlock cards by completing daily tasks such as following accounts or commenting on posts. The set contains 144 cards, with each of the 48 participating nations represented by three types: Country Emblem, Star Player, and Icon Card featuring legendary figures from each country’s football history. Additional “Wild Cards” are available through specific milestones. Duplicate cards can be traded, and collecting more unlocks rewards.
The initiative provides an interactive collecting experience designed to encourage repeated engagement during the tournament. TikTok noted that 59% of its users watch sports content in the app, often finding short highlights more entertaining than full games. The cards aim to capitalize on this interest by giving users additional reasons to return and participate.
This approach resembles earlier NFT-style digital collectibles but is framed as a fan engagement tool tied to a major sporting event. While NFTs faced widespread criticism and market decline in previous years, TikTok’s version focuses on utility within event-driven campaigns rather than speculative value. Such features may become more common as apps seek to differentiate themselves and maintain user activity beyond passive scrolling – and, more importantly, try to drive further engagement on huge events like the World Cup in the future.
