Meta Plans to Use AI for 90% of Content Review by 2027

Meta is accelerating its replacement of human staff with artificial intelligence for content and ad review. The company currently uses AI for 50% of these tasks and aims to increase that to 90% by the end of 2026. This would mean the vast majority of moderation decisions across Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms would be handled by AI systems.

The shift is part of Meta’s broader strategy to cut costs and demonstrate the practical value of its massive AI investments. The company is spending hundreds of billions on AI development and seeks to show how these tools can replace human labor in operational roles.

However, recent incidents highlight potential risks. Hackers recently exploited Meta’s AI support chatbot to gain unauthorized access to Instagram accounts by tricking it into sending verification codes to different email addresses. While Meta has fixed that specific vulnerability, the event underscores challenges with AI systems that respond to natural language queries. Such systems can be manipulated in many ways, making full protection difficult.

Meta’s push to empower AI with more sensitive tasks increases the potential for similar exploits if other measures aren’t taken to increase security, something that would need to be a priority focus going forward. Balancing rapid adoption with security remains a significant challenge as the company works to justify its AI spending and sell similar tools to other organizations.
