Pew Survey: US Adults Support Teen Social Media Restrictions

A Pew Research survey of more than 9,000 U.S. adults found that 60% support restrictions on teen social media usage, while only 20% oppose the idea. The results reflect growing public concern about the impact of social media on young users, amid ongoing debates about age-based bans.

The findings come as several countries and U.S. states consider or implement restrictions. Australia’s under-16 ban, introduced in December 2025, has shown limited effectiveness in preventing access. The UK recently announced plans to ban teenagers from livestreaming on social apps, while California and Florida have moved forward with their own state-level restrictions.

Public sentiment toward teen social media restrictions has shifted since a similar Pew survey in 2023. Support appears broad, with many viewing restrictions as a way to reduce screen time and encourage real-world interaction. However, critics argue that bans may simply push users to less regulated platforms or alternative tools like gaming consoles and messaging apps.

The survey highlights a tension between protecting young users and the reality of how digital connection has become embedded in daily life. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated online socialization for many children, making social media and gaming a primary means of interaction. Reversing this trend entirely is considered unrealistic by some experts.
