Snapchat Introduces ‘Topic Chats’ for Public Discussions

Snapchat is expanding beyond its long-standing focus on private messaging with the launch of Topic Chats, a new feature designed to bring structured public conversations into the app. The rollout marks one of the company’s most significant product shifts in years, positioning Snapchat to compete more directly with platforms where group discussion and community discovery drive engagement.

Topic Chats are built around themes ranging from global events to entertainment fandoms, allowing users to enter chatrooms tied to subjects like Formula 1 or reality TV. The feature functions as a lightweight, interest-based discussion hub without exposing a user’s full identity or profile details. Display names appear alongside messages, but profiles remain inaccessible to non-friends – an intentional design choice to prevent unsolicited contact and preserve the app’s signature privacy model.

To manage safety at scale, Snapchat says it will rely on a mix of LLM-powered moderation tools and human oversight. Messages must comply with its Community Guidelines, and the company notes that it will issue warnings or block accounts when violations occur. Topic Chats will also retain messages for up to five years, a longer window than the ephemeral content the app is known for, likely reflecting the need for auditability in public discussion spaces.

The feature also integrates with Spotlight, Snapchat’s short-form video feed. Relevant Spotlight clips will appear within Topic Chats, creating a loop between conversation and content consumption – a trend increasingly common across short-video platforms. Until now, the only place for public dialogue in the app was Spotlight comment threads, which often served as ad-hoc conversation hubs. According to Snapchat, user behavior in those comments helped shape the new format. As the company noted, “Snapchatters create billions of Snaps every day… and we’ve also found that the Snapchat community loves commenting publicly about trending topics and events.”
