Survey: Festivals Become Cultural Filters in Indian Dating

In India, participation in major festivals is increasingly serving as a litmus test for compatibility among singles, according to a new survey from dating app QuackQuack. The study, which polled 11,000 users between ages 20 and 35 across cities large and small, suggests that nearly 40 percent of daters now view celebrations such as Navratri or Durga Pujo not just as holidays, but as a way to assess a potential partner’s cultural alignment.

QuackQuack argues that festivities have become more than just religious or social events – they’re becoming signals of shared values, family dynamics, and emotional investment. The report notes that 32 percent of respondents said they quietly judge a match’s engagement with cultural festivals, while 44 percent of people aged 22 to 28 said they would rule out someone indifferent to such celebrations. For many, the issue isn’t religious belief, but a lack of emotional attachment or respect for tradition.

The survey also surfaces friction around customary behaviors like fasting and dietary practices. While 16 percent of active daters said they would decline to date someone who feasts during fasting days, 37 percent of men and women said they would not tolerate mockery of food choices. QuackQuack cautions that such differences can reflect deeper attitudes toward tradition, humility, or respect.

Another key insight concerns ceremony rigidity. Around 14 percent of men under 25 – and 12 percent of women – reported that they have severed ties with matches who insisted upon strict ritual observance. The survey suggests that younger users are more open to fluid spiritual belief, as long as the partner shows cultural respect.

Age also plays a role: among users over 28, one in three said that family pressure to settle intensifies during festival periods. QuackQuack reports a discernible uptick in matches during festival seasons, indicating that singles often leverage the calendar to push romantic conversations forward. This survey is consistent with earlier QuackQuack findings: previous reports have documented surges in engagement during festival months as users rework profile imagery and initiate more conversations tied to cultural occasions.
