TikTok Launches Ad-Free Subscription in the UK

TikTok has introduced an ad-free subscription tier in the United Kingdom, giving users the option to pay for an experience without personalized advertisements. The new “TikTok Ad-Free” plan costs £3.99 per month (approximately $5.44) and will gradually roll out to users aged 18 and over in the coming months.

Subscribers will see no ads in the app and can disable the use of their personal data for ad targeting, aligning with evolving UK data privacy regulations. Users who choose not to subscribe will continue using the standard version of TikTok with personalized ads.

TikTok framed the subscription as a way to give users more control over their experience, stating it empowers “discovery, connection and inspiration” through additional customization options. The company emphasized that the core TikTok experience remains unchanged for non-paying users.

The move follows a similar strategy by Meta, which offers ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in the UK and EU to comply with stricter data usage rules. These developments stem from legal pressures around personal data and targeted advertising, including a notable 2022 case brought by a UK human rights campaigner against Meta.

Both platforms are adapting to regulations that give users greater rights to object to their data being used for marketing purposes. By offering paid ad-free options, companies can continue generating revenue from users who prefer to opt out of tracking while maintaining free access for others. Whether the subscription will see significant uptake remains uncertain.
