UK Considers Overnight Social Media Blackout for Teens

UK officials are exploring additional restrictions on teenage social media use, including a proposed overnight blackout for users aged 16 and 17.

The measure would block access to social media apps between midnight and 6 a.m. by default, with users able to change the setting. Features designed to encourage prolonged scrolling, such as algorithmic recommendations, would also be disabled by default during these hours.

This proposal builds on the UK government’s plan to ban under-16s from social media platforms and livestreaming. The overnight restriction aims to address concerns about social media addiction and overuse, particularly among teenagers who may stay online late into the night.

The measures are part of ongoing implementation of the Online Safety Act. Officials hope the default settings will encourage healthier sleep patterns and reduce late-night exposure to potentially harmful content.

However, enforcement remains a significant challenge. In Australia, where an under-16 social media ban has been in effect for six months, early data suggests around 70% of underage users continue to access platforms despite age-checking systems. Similar concerns exist in the UK, where tech-savvy teens may use VPNs or other workarounds to bypass restrictions. Current proposals do not appear to include specific limitations on VPN usage.

Critics argue that without robust, standardized age verification and clear enforcement mechanisms, such bans may have limited practical impact. Platforms have limited incentive to strictly enforce restrictions that could reduce user numbers, and fines may be contested on grounds of good-faith efforts.

Evidence on the overall impact of social media on teenage mental health remains mixed. While some studies link heavy use to negative outcomes, others highlight benefits from connection and information access. The effectiveness of time-based restrictions in improving wellbeing has not been conclusively established.
