X Imposes Strict New Posting Limits on Non-Premium Users
X has significantly tightened daily posting restrictions for non-Premium (unverified) accounts. As of mid-May, free users are now limited to 50 original posts and 200 replies per day. This represents a sharp reduction from the previous limit of up to 2,400 posts per day.
The new limits, detailed in X’s official Help Center, are broken into smaller semi-hourly intervals to prevent bursts of activity. Direct message limits remain at 500 per day, while users can still follow up to 400 accounts daily. Premium subscribers are unaffected and retain much higher limits.
X states the changes are primarily designed to combat spam, bots, and platform manipulation. The platform has been battling junk content, including repetitive promotional posts, crypto scams, and low-quality replies. Reducing the volume of posts from non-paying accounts is intended to ease pressure on backend systems and improve overall feed quality.
The move also supports X’s broader goals of improving data integrity for its xAI systems, including the Grok chatbot. A cleaner, less artificially inflated data stream helps AI models better reflect genuine user conversations and interests
Many casual users who rarely post more than a few times daily are unlikely to notice the change. However, heavy posters, journalists, live event followers, and power users have expressed frustration, with some calling the limits overly restrictive. Others view it as another incentive to subscribe to X Premium.
This update continues X’s differentiating experiences between free and paid users. Since acquiring the platform, Elon Musk has repeatedly adjusted rate limits and features to reduce spam while encouraging subscriptions. Earlier attempts, such as temporary broad rate limits in 2024, drew significant backlash. Time will tell whether the new restrictions meaningfully reduce spam without alienating legitimate users.
