X Launches Standalone X Chat App on iOS
X has released X Chat, a separate application dedicated to direct messaging, following a month of beta testing. The app is now available on iOS and provides users with a dedicated space for DMs outside the main X platform.
According to the App Store description, X Chat promotes strong privacy features. It claims end-to-end encryption using a unique key pair for each user, protected by a device-stored PIN, with the statement that “no one can read your conversation, not even X.” The app also advertises no ads and no tracking.
However, security researchers have questioned these claims. In late 2025, software engineer David Nepozitek identified weaknesses in X’s encryption approach, noting that conversation keys remain static rather than rotating. This design could make past and future messages vulnerable if a key is compromised. Following the launch, the iOS development team Mysk described the end-to-end encryption claims as “misleading at best,” pointing out structural vulnerabilities that could allow the platform operator access to messages.
Despite the encryption concerns, X Chat offers standard messaging functions, including chats with X contacts. It serves as an additional entry point for users who rely on DMs on the platform.
The launch fits into X owner Elon Musk’s long-term vision of transforming X into an “everything app” that handles social interaction, payments, and other services in one ecosystem. A dedicated chat app with enhanced security features may help address regulatory requirements for financial services approvals. For now, X Chat provides users who depend on X DMs with another access option. An Android version has not yet launched.
