TikTok to Close Nashville Office, Lay Off 250 Employees
TikTok is closing its Nashville office and laying off approximately 250 employees as part of a restructuring of its U.S. operations, according to a report by The New York Times. The office, operated by TikTok USDS JV, houses part of the company’s U.S.-based content moderation team and is expected to close on October 5.
Employees were reportedly notified by email and informed they would receive severance packages. Several workers told The New York Times they were also logged out of company systems shortly after receiving the notification.
In a statement to the publication, TikTok USDS said the decision was made to streamline operations and better align teams for the company’s long-term growth strategy. The company did not provide details on how the layoffs would affect its content moderation efforts or whether the roles would be replaced elsewhere.
The move comes shortly after TikTok USDS published its first transparency reports covering platform security and community guidelines enforcement in the United States. The reports outlined the scale of the company’s moderation activities between January 22 and March 31, during which more than 8.4 million videos were removed for violating platform policies.
According to the report, approximately 82% of those removals were identified through automated detection systems before being reviewed or confirmed by human moderators. The figures highlight the increasing role that artificial intelligence plays in TikTok’s content moderation workflow.
The Nashville layoffs may reflect broader changes in how the company balances automated systems with human review. As AI-powered moderation tools continue to improve, technology companies across the social media sector have increasingly explored opportunities to automate tasks that previously required large moderation teams.
