X Reduces Payments to Clickbait and News Aggregator Accounts
X is significantly cutting payments to accounts that frequently post clickbait and rapid-fire news aggregation content.Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, announced on April 12, 2026, that all aggregator accounts will have their payouts reduced to 60% in the current pay cycle, followed by an additional 20% reduction in the next cycle. The platform is also lowering compensation for accounts that habitually use phrases like “BREAKING” on nearly every post.
Bier explained that flooding the timeline with hundreds of reposted or sensationalized stories crowds out original creators and hinders the growth of new voices. He emphasized that while X will not limit speech or reach, it will not reward manipulation of the platform’s monetization program or its users.
The announcement followed complaints from several news accounts that reported being demonetized or seeing sharp drops in earnings.Others saw unexpectedly low payouts and began to worry that they had been incorrectly labelled as one of these aggregator accounts.
Some observers argue the platform’s algorithm and monetization system have favored high-volume, sensational content over quality journalism and original posts. This latest adjustment aims to reduce the incentive for clickbait-style posting while attempting to support more authentic content creation on the platform, although time will tell if this change works as intended or if users will find a way to brute-force through the reduced payments.
