Survey: Singles Prioritize Handling of Past Relationships Over Profiles

A recent survey by dating app QuackQuack indicates that many Gen Z users in India place significant importance on a potential partner’s relationship history when evaluating compatibility.

The survey of 9,847 users aged 22 to 27 across multiple cities, including Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, found that over 55% of respondents care more about how a match handled past relationships than the number of previous partners. Participants described this as assessing a “relationship resume,” focusing on emotional patterns, maturity, communication style, and conflict management rather than simply counting exes.

One notable trend is interest in what the survey calls a “conflict transcript”. Around 41% of daters over 25 said they want to understand how potential partners managed arguments in previous relationships. Common questions include who initiated difficult conversations, who apologized first, and typical post-argument behavior. Respondents flagged red flags such as complete blame on ex-partners or avoidance of the topic.

Emotional closure and post-breakup behavior also emerged as important factors. Eight in ten participants from Tier 1 and 2 cities reported paying attention to whether someone discusses past relationships with balance. Over 44% of women and 39% of men said they become cautious if a person labels an ex as “crazy” or “toxic,” viewing it as a lack of accountability.

Additionally, 36% of respondents aged 23 to 27 expressed greater interest in matches who demonstrate “behavioral upgrades” after breakups, such as improved communication, healthier boundaries, or addressing personal insecurities.

QuackQuack Founder and CEO Ravi Mittal noted that users are increasingly aware of how romantic history can reveal emotional maturity and potential compatibility issues. In other words, a user’s behaviour when it comes to past relationships has become a major talking point, with younger singles wanting more insight than just surface-level details on a profile.
