A plastic crocodile wrapped in men’s pants was amongst the most bizarre gifts bought to impress Smooch users on a first date.

The site asked 1,000 users for their first date horror stories, and found that male suitors had some strange ideas about acceptable gifts to bring.

The most bizarre gifts included a tin of prunes, a live lobster, a reduced-price loaf of bread and an electric tin opener.

The survey also found that a third of male respondents expected a kiss on a first date, compared to 15% of women.

47% said they just “hope their date turns up”.

Lucy Clarke, Marketing Manager at Smooch.com, said:

“While some of these gifts are practical, some of them are just plain weird. Our studies show that women are still traditionalists when it comes to dating; a bunch of flowers still go a long way. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that’s what they’re getting!

“We’ll be running a campaign throughout May with first date tips for online daters. Hint: Turning up with a plastic crocodile wrapped in your pants is not recommended.”
