Match Group CEO Speaks at Senate AI Forum
Bernard Kim, CEO of Match Group, gave a statement at the recent AI Insight Forum hosted by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Kim outlined the company’s AI principles and some examples of how the technology is benefiting singles.
This AI Insight Forum, the sixth edition of its kind, focused on the intersection of privacy and liability in AI Policy. It was held by Senators Chuck Schumer; Mike Rounds; Martin Heinrich; and Todd Young.
Bernard Kim gave a statement at the forum to discuss Match Group’s adoption and investment in AI technology.
AI Principles
He started by discussing the dating company’s AI principles. For example Kim shared that AI products can help enhance authenticity, “helping users better showcase their personality and put their best foot forward in presenting themselves to potential matches”.
The Match Group CEO also outlined that it’s beginning to look into generative AI, but that the company is “committed to tests, exploration, and development work alongside industry partners, third-party experts, and our communities, both before sensitive new features or tools are deployed and throughout their use”.
When it comes to privacy, Kim states that “We do not sell user data to third parties, and we will be transparent about how we use data to improve generative AI outcomes”.
AI Adoption
Looking at some of the uses of AI in Match Group so far, Kim highlighted the ‘Are You Sure?’ feature which launched on Tinder and other dating platforms. The feature uses AI to detect harmful language in a user’s message and prompts them to reconsider sending it.
“Over time, there has been an 84% decrease in the feature being triggered to users on Plenty of Fish, indicating the tool is effectively guiding users to learn from the intervention prompts and change their behavior”, Kim explained.
He outlined that this tool would be rolled out to Match, Stir, OurTime, BLK, Chispa, and Upward by the end of 2023, reaching another 4 million users.
“As part of our work to provide our users with tools to keep them safe and secure, over the last several years, we have pursued a series of investments to help build new innovative AI- powered safety features and tools across our portfolio with the primary objective of helping our users date safely”, Kim shared.
“Because we live in a society where socialized harassment is, sadly, endemic, we have invested in technology to disrupt harms as they occur, spending nearly $250 million in the last few years alone on technologies, programs, and resources dedicated to keeping our users safe”, he added.
Other tech leaders at the forum included Mark Surman, President and Executive Director, Mozilla; Samir Jain, Vice President of Policy, Center for Democracy and Technology; and Mutale Nkonde, CEO, AI For the People.
