Tinder GIFs Are Making Conversations Last Twice As Long

Earlier this year, we reported that Tinder had teamed up with GIPHY to allow users to exchange GIFs with other singles.

When chatting to matches on the app, users can select the blue “GIF” button found at the bottom left of their chat interface, browse through millions of GIFs and post them to their matches.

And in addition to providing an entertaining reply to a message, the feature is also proving to have a number of other perks, by improving users’ success rates.

New internal Tinder data given to BuzzFeed News has revealed that Tinder GIFs are helping to improve the likelihood of users receiving a response from a match.

Looking at the app’s conversation data, Tinder found that when a user sends a GIF on the app instead of plain text or an emoji, they are 30% more likely to receive an answer.

And according to the company, including GIFs in a conversation will also make the exchange last twice as long as conversations without them.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Tinder co-founder and senior VP of product Jonathan Badeen said: “GIFs allow people to better say what they want to and express emotion, which is something that’s really difficult to do in text alone.

“It opens up people to start more conversations and to break the ice.”

Since the addition of GIFs in its January update – which also introduced message “likes” and the ability to upload profile images directly from a smartphone camera roll – 20 million GIFs have been sent on the app, the company has said.
