eHarmony Survey Explores How Masculinity Impacts Modern Dating

Online dating platform eHarmony has released a new survey, The New Leading Man, shedding light on how modern masculinity is influencing romantic relationships. The survey, which gathered insights from 2,000 adults either identifying as men or dating men, was meant to highlight both the expectations and pressures of masculine-presenting men.

One of the key findings is that traditional expectations around masculinity persist. For example, 42% of Gen Z women and 35% of millennial women admitted they wouldn’t date a man shorter than themselves, underscoring ongoing societal pressures on men regarding appearance. The study also highlights financial pressure as a significant issue for men, with 23% of respondents citing finances as their top concern.

Additionally, nearly a third (31%) of male respondents expressed self-consciousness about their ability to satisfy their partners, with a specific focus on the pressure to ensure their partner’s sexual satisfaction. All of these requirements and expectations add strain for men who may not fit the stereotypical “tall, dark, and handsome” ideal often seen as the standard.

While some may see this as common sense, it highlights some important opportunities for new and upcoming dating sites – mainly that there is a space for platforms that allow users to shed those expectations if they don’t conform to “traditional” masculinity. As society becomes more mindful of gender dynamics – and people become more willing to break away from tradition – creating inclusive and supportive environments in dating could be both comforting for users and profitable for dating platforms.
