Meta Updates Disclosure Labels for AI-Generated Content in Facebook and Instagram Ads
Meta has introduced updated disclosure tags for advertisements on Facebook and Instagram that contain artificial intelligence-generated elements.
The new labels will appear in the “About this ad” section, accessible via the three-dot menu on promoted posts. They will indicate when ad content has been created or significantly edited using Meta’s own generative AI tools or third-party tools such as Photoshop or DALL-E.
Meta will automatically apply these labels for features including Background Generation, Image Generation, and Add Animation. The company will also use industry-standard detection methods, such as C2PA metadata, to identify content created or edited with external AI tools.
The change aims to increase transparency around AI use in advertising. It follows Meta’s earlier decision to change in-stream ad labels from “Sponsored” to “Ad.” The company stated it will continue refining its labeling approach in collaboration with advertisers, policymakers, and industry partners.
Meta already applies AI disclosure tags to organic posts. The extension to paid advertisements provides more consistent information for users viewing promotional content.
The update could help address concerns about misleading or unrealistic depictions in ads that incorporate AI-generated imagery or video. As generative AI tools become more common in marketing, clearer labeling may influence how users perceive and interact with sponsored content.
