Pets Are Emerging as A Major Online Dating Compatibility Factor
Pets are playing an increasingly prominent role in modern dating, often serving as compatibility filters or relationship dealbreakers. According to a survey by the Hily dating app, 82% of pet owners said they would choose their pet over a romantic relationship if forced to decide. Pet photos also strongly influence initial attraction, with 65% of Gen Z and 55% of Millennials reporting they are more likely to like a profile featuring a cute animal.
Dating coach Julie Nguyen noted that pets in photos convey traits like adventurousness or emotional warmth, while also acting as filters for allergies and animal lovers. For the roughly 16% of daters with pet allergies, the issue creates substantial practical and emotional challenges. More than a third of allergic respondents said they have hesitated to engage with profiles showing prominent pet photos. Allergies can impact sleeping arrangements, vacations, cleaning routines, and overall lifestyle compatibility.
The emotional weight of pets often leaves allergic daters feeling pressured to accommodate rather than request changes. Seventy-eight percent said they would regularly take allergy medication to continue dating someone they liked. Conversely, three-quarters of pet owners said they would end a relationship rather than give up their animal. Among non-pet owners, one-third felt dating a pet owner meant they would never come first, and 34% said they avoid people overly attached to their pets.
These dynamics reflect how deeply pets are now woven into personal identity and lifestyle expectations. Compatibility is no longer limited to shared values or interests but increasingly includes whether there is space for a beloved animal in the relationship. Given that many pets are seen as non-negotiable family members, it’s no surprise that they have become a major part of how users approach their dating experience.
