Snapchat Restricts Spotlight and Stories Sharing for Users Under 16

Snapchat has introduced new restrictions for users under the age of 16 on its Spotlight and Stories features. Starting this week, younger teens can only share Spotlight videos and Stories with mutually accepted friends. The update removes public visibility for this age group and eliminates followers and favorite counts on their content.

Previously, users under 16 could post to Spotlight without linking it to their profile. The new system limits exposure and adds parental monitoring options through Snapchat’s Family Center. Direct Snaps remain unaffected, though parents can still oversee messaging via existing controls.

Snapchat described the change as a way to reduce attention-driven posting and protect impressionable users from potential unwanted contact. The platform has been identified in reports as a common venue for online grooming, making the restrictions a targeted response to safety concerns.

The timing aligns with increasing global regulatory pressure on social media platforms. Australia’s under-16 ban, implemented in December 2025, has already prompted Snapchat to lock or disable over 415,000 suspected underage accounts in that market. Similar measures in other countries could significantly affect user numbers and engagement.

The restrictions do not eliminate all risks, as direct messaging remains available. Their overall effectiveness will depend on enforcement, user compliance, and parental involvement.
